Viking Dishwasher Has No Lights and No Power
A completely dark Viking dishwasher, no display and no response to any button, usually has nothing wrong inside it. In Bellevue kitchens what we usually find is a tripped breaker, a switch by the sink turned off, or the machine's own power button left off. What we usually find
- Most often
The supply. A tripped breaker, a wall switch by the sink flicked off along with the disposer, or an outlet in the sink cabinet that has tripped its own reset button.
- Sometimes
The machine's own On/Off key. Current Viking panels stay dark until it is pressed, and to save energy they switch themselves off after a programme ends, or when one is chosen but never started.
- Rarely
A control that has failed, or a connection to it that has come loose. Both sit behind panels, and both are for a technician to test with the power isolated.
Dark, or lit but not starting
Separate a machine that shows nothing from one that lights up and will not run. A panel that lights while the programme refuses to begin usually comes down to the door: Viking’s manual lists an open door among the reasons a machine will not start, and current models want it shut straight after Start is pressed. A delayed start, which can be set up to 24 hours ahead, also leaves a lit panel over an idle machine. That is a different fault from this one.
A panel that stays blank however you press it is the supply or the control, and the supply is checked first because it is the one you can reach.
The circuit it lives on
Viking’s installation guide for its current 3, 5 and 7 Series dishwashers asks for a properly grounded circuit given over to the dishwasher alone, on a 15-amp fuse or breaker. Where a dishwasher and a disposer share a circuit instead, a trip at one takes out both, and a jammed disposer can leave the dishwasher dark too.
A breaker that snaps off again the moment it is reset is not a switch to keep flipping. Leave it off and hand it over; something on that circuit is drawing more than it should.
Safe checks before you call

Try any switch near the sink
Many kitchens have a wall switch for the disposer, and in some it feeds the dishwasher as well. Make sure every switch by the sink is on.

Look at the breaker panel
Find the breaker for the dishwasher or the kitchen. If it sits in the middle or off position, push it fully off and then on. If it trips again straight away, leave it off.

Check the outlet under the sink
Current Viking dishwashers plug in by a three-prong cord, usually in the sink cabinet. Make sure the plug is pushed fully home, and press the outlet's reset button if it has one. Do not open any wiring box.

Press the On/Off key once
Press the On/Off key and watch the panel. On current Viking models the display lights as soon as the machine is on; if it switched itself off after the last wash, that was all it needed.

Does a dark dishwasher mean the control board has gone?
Not usually on its own. Most dark machines come back once the breaker, a wall switch, an outlet reset or the machine's own power button is put right.
