Orange Flame Lifting Off a Viking Burner Cap

A flicker of orange that comes and goes is seldom a fault. A flame that stays orange, lifts clear of the burner or roars as it lights is another matter, and behind it Viking Repair Bellevue most often finds ports half-blocked by a boilover or a cap that went back crooked. If a careful clean and reseat leave it unchanged, call (425) 696-2636.

What we usually find

  1. Most often

Ports part-blocked by a boilover or cleaner, or a cap not sitting level. Viking's own troubleshooting puts clogged ports first for a flame that burns large, distorted or yellow.

  2. Sometimes

Something burning off rather than a fault: salt from a pot that boiled over, since sodium colours a flame yellow, or dust and spray mist from the room. It clears once the source is gone.

  3. Rarely

An air shutter out of adjustment, or a range running on a different gas from the one it is set up for. Viking lists both; they belong to a technician or a gas fitter, never a home adjustment.

One burner or the whole cooktop

One burner turning orange or lifting while its neighbours burn clean points at that burner’s cap and ports. Every burner changing together points at something they share: the room air, or how the range is set up for its gas. A range that came from another house or went back in after a remodel belongs there, and that question goes to a gas fitter or a technician, not a screwdriver.

Lifting deserves its own mention. Viking’s guide for its earlier self-clean gas ranges puts flames that lift off the ports, burn yellow or run noisy in one bracket, with one answer for all three: clean the burner, and if that does not settle it, have a qualified technician adjust it.

When to stop and call

A flame still orange after cleaning, or lifting that carries on once the parts are reseated, means the burner needs a technician. A smell of gas is not a burner visit: leave the house and call the gas utility from outside first.

Safe checks before you call

  1. Lift the cap once it is cold

With the burner off and cooled, take off the grate and pull the cap straight up. Look at its underside and at the ring of ports below it for baked-on crust.

  2. Open blocked ports with a straight pin

A straight pin is the tool Viking names for this job. Clear each blocked port without widening or bending it, and never use a toothpick, which Viking rules out.

  3. Wash off salt from a boilover

If a salted pot boiled over, wash the cap and burner parts in warm soapy water and dry them fully. A flame coloured only by that residue settles once it is gone.

  4. Set the cap back level

Refit the parts so any tabs underneath sit clear of the igniter and the cap rests flat without rocking. Then light the burner and watch the whole ring.

  5. Stop and hand it over

If none of that changes what the Viking is doing, leave it there and ring Viking Repair Bellevue on (425) 696-2636. Tell us what you already tried; it narrows the visit before we set out.

Asked about this

  • Can I adjust the air shutter myself?

No. The air shutter controls how much air joins the gas before it burns, and getting it wrong makes the flame worse, not better. Viking's troubleshooting names a badly set shutter as one cause of a large, yellow flame, and its guidance sends that adjustment to a qualified technician. Viking Repair Bellevue handles it on (425) 696-2636.

  • Is soot on the bottom of my pans part of the same problem?

Usually, yes. A clean gas flame leaves pans clean underneath, while a yellow or orange one burns less completely and leaves black soot behind. If the soot started around the time the flame changed colour, it is one fault. Wash the pans, clean the burner, and if soot comes back, ring Viking Repair Bellevue on (425) 696-2636.
